Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the influence of curiosity on the reading quality of seventh-grade students at MTs YP KH Syamsuddin Ponorogo. Good reading skills are essential for academic success, yet the reading quality of students often remains inadequate. This research is important to determine whether an increase in curiosity can improve students' reading quality. Design/methods/approach – This study uses a causal approach with data collection methods through questionnaires. The research sample consists of seventh-grade students at MTs YP KH Syamsuddin Ponorogo. The data were analyzed using simple linear regression to determine the effect of the independent variable (curiosity) on the dependent variable (reading quality). Findings – The analysis results indicate that curiosity significantly affects reading quality. The coefficient of determination shows that curiosity influences reading quality by 28%. F-tests and T-tests also show a significant influence both simultaneously and partially between curiosity and students' reading quality. Research implications/limitations – This study shows that increasing students' curiosity can improve their reading quality, which in turn can support better academic achievement. However, this research is limited to a sample from one madrasah, so the results may not be generalizable to all student populations. Further research is needed to examine the influence of other variables that may contribute to reading quality.
